Q & A

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need a Canadian Representative?

ISED require a contact person and address located in Canada if they have any post-Certification inquiries and/or for shipping and receiving audit samples to and from their facility if they select your certified product(s) for a post-Certification audit evaluation in accordance with ISED’s market surveillance program. If you are located outside Canada and do not have a Canadian entity, then you are required to have a Canadian Representative in order to certify your products for the Canadian marketplace.

Do we need a Canadian Representative if our product does not contain a radio transmitter?

A Canadian Representative is not required for products that do not contain a radio transmitter subject to the ISED RSS Certification requirements (RSS-Gen), or is not classified as Terminal Equipment subject to the ISED Registration requirements (DC-01). Radio apparatus or broadcasting equipment that is exempt from ISED Certification (does not require a Technical Acceptance Certificate or a Certificate issued by a CB), or interference-causing equipment subject to the ICES requirements (ICES-Gen), does not require a Canadian Representative.

How long do we need to retain a Canadian Representative?

ISED require that the applicant maintain a valid Canadian Representative agreement for as long as each certified product is offered on the Canadian market. We offer numerous flexible service options for you to select how long you may require our Canadian Representative Service in order to best suit your needs.

How long is our Canadian Representative Letter of Attestation valid?

The Canadian Representative Letter of Attestation should be valid for as long as the certified product(s) is/are offered for sale in Canada. Typically, this duration is unknown at the time of Certification, therefore we offer varying flexible service durations. You can contact us anytime to extend or switch your service option.

What happens if our certified product is selected for post-certification audit by ISED?

If your certified product is selected for audit evaluation by ISED, then you as the applicant and us as the Canadian Representative will receive an e-mail from ISED requesting the audit with instructions on where to ship the units. We will also provide you with our audit checklist containing detailed instructions for shipping the test units to our facility. On completion of the audit evaluation by ISED, we will ship the units back to you, unless otherwise instructed.

What is the deliverable you will provide to us?

We will issue our signed Canadian Representative Letter of Attestation to you (on receipt of the signed service agreement and P.O.), which you are then required to provide to your Certification Body with your Certification application. The signed Canadian Representative Letter of Attestation we provide to you will specify a commencement date and an expiration date based on which service option you have selected.

What happens when our Canadian Representative Letter of Attestation expires?

Don’t worry, we will contact you 60 days prior to the date of expiration listed on the letter. Please note that ISED require the signed Canadian Representative Letter of Attestation to be valid for a minimum of 60 days beyond the expiration date listed on the letter when you are submitting a new product Certification application.

How soon do we need to provide test units if our certified product is selected for audit by ISED?

ISED require receipt of the test units at their facility within 4 weeks from the date of the audit request. In turn, we request that you ship the test units to arrive at our facility no less than one week prior to the date the test units are required for receipt at ISED. Under certain circumstances, an extended date may be requested.
